Monica Arac de Nyeko is a Ugandan writer, born in 1979. She was educated at Makerere University in Uganda, and the University of Groningen, in Holland. When she was at Makerere University, she worked at Femrite, Uganda Women Writers Association, as a member. She won the Caine Prize for her "Jambula Tree" in 2007. It is an annual literary award for short story by an African writer, written in English. "Jambula Tree" is about two teenage girls falling in love and facing an unforgiving community because of it. One of her other noted stories is "Strange Fruit," which contains an allusion to the song of the same name performed by Billie Holiday.

Ha Jin is a Chinese-American writer. He was born in 1956 in Liaoning, China. He left China in 1985 to attend Brandeis University in the US, where he obtained a Ph.D.. The Tiananmen Square incident occurred in 1989 during his time there, and he decided to remain in the US, and started writing poems in English. His first collection of poetry "Between Silences" was published in 1990 in the US. His works include five poetry books, four short story collections, five novels and an essay. He is a recipient of the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Asian American Literary Award, amongst others.

Chika Unigwe is an Afro-Belgian writer, born in 1974 in Enugu, Nigeria. She earned a Ph.D in Literature from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and now lives in Turnhout, Belgium. She writes both in English and Dutch. She is the recipient of several awards for her short stories like the BBC Short Story Competition, a Commonwealth Short Story Award, a Flemish literary prize, etc.. Her first novel, De Feniks, was published in Dutch in 2005, and the second novel, Fata Morgana, was published in Dutch in 2008, and the English version, On Black Sisters' Street, was published in 2009.

Tai Dong Huai was born in Taizhou, China and adopted by an American couple. Her short stories and flash fictions have appeared in many online literary magazines such as Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, VerbSap, SmokeLong Quarterly, Hobart, Thieves Jargon, elimae, Underground Voices, etc. She is a 2008 Pushcart Prize nominee. "New Baby" and "Chinaman's Chance" are from "I Come From Where I've Never Been," a collection in progress.

Chang-Rae Lee is a Korean American novelist. He was born in 1965 in Korea. He left Korea when he was three years old and emigrated in the US with his family. He was raised in New York, and graduated from Yale University with a degree in English, and from the University of Oregon with a MFA in writing. His works are "Native Speaker" (1995), "A Gesture Life" (1999), "Aloft" (2004), and "The Surrendered" (2010). He is a recipient of the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, The Asian American Literary Awards and Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature amongst others, and a nominated finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Azhar Abidi is a Pakistani Australian writer. He was born in 1968 in wah, Pakistan. He was raised in Pakistan and later went to the UK to study electrical engineering at the Imperial College London. Afterward he earned an M.B.A. from the University of Melbourne and migrated to Australia in 1994. He has written travelogues and a number of short stories including "The Secret History of the Flying Carpet" as well as two novels "Passarola Rising" (2006) and "Twilight" (2008). His books were published in Australia, the USA, Canada and India, and the first one was translated into Spanish and Portuguese. He lives in Melbourne.

Alfian Sa'at is a Singaporean writer, poet and playwright. He was born in 1977 as a Malay-Muslim of Minang, Javanese and Hakka descent. Alfian published two collections of poetry, "One Fierce Hour" (1998) and "A History of Amnesia" (2001), and the collection of short stories "Corridor" (1999) that won the Singapore Literature Prize Commendation Award. He has written many plays both in English and Malay. They have been translated into German and Swedish, and have been performed in several capital cities of Europe as well as Singapore and Malaysia . Alfian is currently the resident playwright of theatre group W!LD RICE (Singapore).

Sushma Joshi is a Nepali writer and filmmaker. She was born in 1973 in Kathmandu, Nepal. She went to the USA at 19, and received a BA at Brown University in Rhode Island in 1996, then an MA in anthropology at the New School of Social Research in New York(2002) and another MA in English Literature at The Breadloaf School of English, Middlebury College in Vermont(2005). "End of the World," her book of short stories, was long-listed for the Frank O' Connor International Short Story Award in 2009. Her writings appear in many kinds of magazines and has been translated into Italian, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Shabnam Nadiya is a writer and translator from Bangladesh. Her writing explores the isolation individuals face because of boundaries of class, gender, race, age and religion. Nadiya’s work has appeared in various anthologies including One World (New Internationalist, UK); In Pursuit of the Perfect Gourmet Garam Masala (Skrev Press, UK); Arshilata: Women’s Fiction from Bangladesh and India (Writers Ink, Bangladesh); Galpa: Short Stories by Women from Bangladesh (Saqi Books, UK); From the Delta (University Press Ltd, Bangladesh) and New Age Short Stories (New Age/writers.ink). She has published in print and online periodicals including Gulf Coast, Arsenic Lobster, Eclectica, World View, Storyglossia, Bonfire, Texts' Bones, The Beat, Words Without Borders, Cerebration, and Kali O Kalam. She was awarded third prize at the Another Look Short Story Contest 2006 (Torrevieja, Spain) and received Honourable Mention at the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize 2007 for her poem “Cityscape”. Currently, she is completing her MFA at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

Bashir Sakhawarz is an Afghan writer. He was born in 1960 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He left Afghanistan in 1981, two years after Russians' invasion of his country. After he graduated from the university in the UK he worked in many countries for various kinds of organizations: the EU, the UN, the Asian Development Bank, various NGOs, and the Red Cross. He says that he was deeply influenced by D.H. Lawrence and Somerset Maugham, and started writing his work in English to reach wider readers. His English works appear in various magazines and presses as well as his Persian works. He lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

Nushin Arbabzadah is an Afghan author, journalist, analyst and translator. She grew up in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation, and fled to Germany with her family. She graduated from high school there and then Hamburg University and Cambridge University. Nushin's first book, From Outside In: Refugees and British Society, was published in London by Arcadia in 2007. She has also edited an anthology of writings by young journalists of different religious backgrounds living in Muslim-majority countries. She is currently a research scholar at UCLA's Center for the Study of Women.

Elaine Chiew is a Malaysian writer who lives in London. She used to be a lawyer in New York City and Hong Kong. She started writing fiction in 2005. She's always been an avid reader and draws inspiration from many sources including Philip Roth, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen, Lorrie Moore, Alice Munro, Michio Kaku (science writer), E.M. Forster, Edith Wharton, Anthony Bourdain (food writer). Asked why she writes, she said, "I write because I have to." Her short stories have won several prizes and appeared in various literary journals.

A. Igoni Barrett is a Nigerian writer. He was born in 1979 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. His mother is a Nigerian, and his father is a Jamaican, Lindsay Barrett who is known as a novelist and poet. He studied agriculture at the University of Ibadan, but left in his final year to pursue a writing career. His first book, a collection of short stories "From Caves of Rotten Teeth" was published in 2005, and a story from this collection won the 2005 BBC World Service short story competition. The second collection of his short stories will be published in 2013 by Graywolf. He lives in Lagos, Nigeria.

Unoma Azuah is a college professor in the United States. Her writing has won multiple awards, including the prestigious Hellman/Hammet Award. Her other awards include the Leonard Trawick, the NDDC/Flora Nwapa, the Urban Spectrum award, and the Aidoo-Snyder Book award. She got her undergraduate degree from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and a Masters degree in English from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio. Her terminal degree in creative writing is from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. Currently, she is finishing work on her second collection of poems entitled, “Home is Where the Heart Hurts.”

Alexander Nderitu is a Kenyan writer. He was born in 1979 in Nyeri, Kenya. He wrote his first feature-length screenplay at the age of 19. He became Africa's first ‘digital novelist’ by "When the Whirlwind Passes" in 2002. he was nominated for the Douglas Coupland Short Story Award for "Life as a Flower" in 2004, and won a Theatre Company prize for his humorous stage play, Hannah and the Angel, in 2005. The play was performed in 17 different venues. Other works are "Angela On My Mind"(a collection of short stories), "The Moon is Made of Green Cheese"(a poetry collection), etc.

Daniel Alarcón is a Peruvian-American writer. He was born in 1977 in Lima, Peru. He left Peru when he was three to live in the US with his family. He earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Columbia University and a master's from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. His first book, War by Candlelight, was a finalist for the 2005 PEN/Hemingway Foundation Award. His debut novel, Lost City Radio, was published in 2007, and has been translated into several languages. In 2008, he was named a "Best Young American Novelist" by Granta magazine, and one of 39 under 39 Latin American Novelists. He writes both in English and Spanish.

Mohsin Hamid is a Pakistani writer who was born in 1971 in Lahore. He was mostly raised in Lahore, but spent part of his childhood in California. He wrote his first two novels, "Moth Smoke" (2000) and "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" (2007) as a student at Princeton and Harvard Law School and while working as a management consultant in New York and London. He has since lived between Lahore and London. His second novel, "The Reluctant Fundamentalist," describes the American society around the time of 9.11 with a critical eye of "others." It became an international bestseller, won numerous awards, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
